Many of our Digging Deep followers are families with serious health challenges. To those without such challenges, it may seem Herculean to face the New Year with optimism.  After all, it’s hard enough to live in the present when you or your child has a chronic or life-threatening illness—how do you overcome such difficulties emotionally, and manage to look forward to 2016?

In fact, we know from many of your moving emails and testimonials that those who deal with the very toughest adversities in life are often the most hopeful, optimistic and proactive individuals, whom we could all learn from as we make our New Years resolutions.  As you set your goals for 2016, we’d like to share a few inspirational quotes which remind us that we all have “the fight” in us to survive big challenges and become stronger, better people for it:

“Strength does not come from winning. Your struggles develop your strengths. When you go through hardships and decide not to surrender, that is strength.”
—Mahatma Ghandi

“All the adversity I’ve had in my life, all my troubles and obstacles, have strengthened me…You may not realize it when it happens, but a kick in the teeth may be the best thing in the world for you.”
—Walt Disney

“That which does not kill us outright makes us stronger.”
—Friedrich Nietzsche

“The art of living lies less in eliminating our troubles than in growing with them.”
—Bernard M. Baruch

“Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved… The world is full of suffering; it is also full of overcoming.”
—Helen Keller

“To become a deeper man is the privilege of those who have suffered.”
—Oscar Wilde

“What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.”
—Buddha

“In times of great stress or adversity, it’s always best to keep busy, to plow your anger and your energy into something positive.”
—Lee Iacocca

“Have courage for the great sorrows of life and patience for the small ones; and when you have laboriously accomplished your daily task, go to sleep in peace.”
— Victor Hugo

““Go back?” he thought. “No good at all! Go sideways? Impossible! Go forward? Only thing to do! On we go!” So up he got, and trotted along with his little sword held in front of him and one hand feeling the wall, and his heart all of a patter and a pitter.”
— J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit
