Our third partner profile is in memory of Char Pribuss of Paintbrush Diplomacy.

Char (10)Digging Deep has lost a very special friend and partner–Char Pribuss, an incredible advocate of children’s self-expression through the creation of art, was truly our first partner through her wonderful contribution of artwork to Digging Deep. She passed away on Saturday, April 18, 2015 at the age of 95. Char co-founded Paintbrush Diplomacy with her husband Rudy, a children’s international art exchange program based in the San Francisco Bay Area started in the early 1970’s.

At its height, more than 10,000 pieces of children’s art created in over 60 or more countries were exchanged annually. “Art is the common language that unites us. If young people knew something about each other through their art, we wouldn’t have the problems that we have today,” Char believed.

Char graciously licensed some of the children’s art images her program had received over the years to Resonance House Publishing for use in Digging Deep. “It is one of the reasons kids are so drawn to using the journal,” explains Sheri Brisson, co-author ofDigging Deep. Char, an accomplished artist herself who began seriously painting at age 12, was a strong believer that children explore their world through art.

She was an influential leader in creative self-expression and the use of art to help children express their feelings, long before the term ‘art therapy’ was coined. “Young people will be inspired to write about their feelings in Digging Deep, thanks in part to the beautiful images from Paintbrush Diplomacy. We know that art both inspires profound feelings to emerge, and feelings inspire beautiful art to emerge. It works both ways,” explains Brisson, “Thank you, Char, for teaching us this, but most importantly, for being my friend.”To read more about Char Pribuss, please see AskMar Publishing.
